Many Zotero users use Zotero to insert footnotes into their documents and then wonder how they can customise the footnote numbering style. It is often assumed that this setting must be made directly in Zotero. However, it is actually a Microsoft Word function that controls the numbering of footnotes. In this article, I will explain how you can customise the footnote numbering in Word according to your wishes, independently of Zotero.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This allows you to change the numbering of your footnotes:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. First open the tab \u2019References<\/strong>\u2018 in the menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Then click on the small arrow<\/strong> in the bottom right-hand corner of the \u2018Footnotes\u2019 group. This opens the dialogue box \u2019Footnote and endnote<\/strong>\u201c.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Make sure that the \u2018Footnotes\u2019 option is selected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. In the \u2018Number format\u2019 field, you can now select how the footnote numbers should look.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    To apply the settings, click on \u2018Apply\u2019. If you want to insert the current footnote at the position of your cursor, click on \u2018Insert\u2019 instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
