What does a Zotero style developer do?

CSL citation styles form the backbone of every automated bibliography in Zotero, Mendeley and other reference management programmes. But creating a style that truly complies with guidelines – covering all source types, special cases and language variants – is not a simple copy-and-paste job. It requires specialist expertise. And that is precisely what I have been passionate about since 2009.

CSL maintainer

Official contributor to the global CSL repository, with hundreds of published styles.

Why CSL style development is a highly specialised skill

The Citation Style Language is an XML-based format with an extensive specifications. A typical academic citation style must correctly handle dozens of different scenarios – from edited volumes to journal articles with a DOI, and from draft legislation to websites without an author. The difficulty lies not in any single case, but in the interplay between them: every rule must be consistent with every other.

Furthermore, it is essential to be familiar and understand how CSL and Zotero integrate. Software is constantly evolving and being updated. As an active member of the Zotero Support Team and a maintainer of the CSL project, I am always up to date with the latest developments in Zotero and CSL.

Typical projects

An overview of the types of style development projects I regularly undertake – to demonstrate what is possible and where the complexities lie.

University

Creation of a standardised footnote style based on the university’s own guidelines for an entire department.

Journal

A journal has switched from Publisher A to Publisher B. The CSL style in the directory is still based on the old guidelines. Authors are complaining on the Zotero forum. The style needs to be updated and resubmitted

again.

Publisher

A citation style is needed to make it easier for future authors to write and reference books. It saves the typesetting team time and effort when preparing the manuscript.

Personal citation style

Creation of a custom citation style for an academic to facilitate the consistent citation of their own publications.

My role in the CSL ecosystem

As an official CSL maintainer I am not just a user, but an active contributor to the standard. I ensure that new styles meet global quality requirements and correct errors in the official repository. This deep integration guarantees styles that are technically sound and future-proof.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Can't I just customise my CSL style myself?

Why not just use ChatGPT?

LLMs often struggle with the strict XML syntax of CSL and ‘hallucinate’ variables that Zotero cannot process. Precision requires human logic. Particularly when it comes to citing sources, where accuracy is crucial to avoid losing marks or having a paper rejected, it is therefore essential to have a style created by a professional.

How much does professional development cost?

The price depends on the complexity of your requirements. For further details, please see made-to-measure citation style.

Are there any ready-made styles available to download or buy?

Of course. In the Zotero style repository. you can find more than 10,000 styles, and in my citation styles shop you will find more than 100 expertly adapted citation styles, such as the Deutsche Zitierweise or specific styles for universities such as for the FOM Hochschule.
