How to unlink Zotero citations in Word

In academic papers and research reports, it is important to cite sources correctly. To this end, Zotero allows you to insert collected citations directly into Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and automatically generate the reference list.
However, it may sometimes be necessary to remove citations from a document and convert them into normal text. This may be the case, for example, if you wish to use the text for other purposes (e.g. for a presentation or a blog post) or if you intend to submit your article to a journal or publisher. It is often a requirement that all field codes be removed from the document, as these can interfere with the typesetting process.
In the image below, you can see the Einstein quote inserted via Zotero on the left-hand side. The grey background indicates that it is an ‘active’ quote. If you use ALT+F9 you can see (as shown on the right) that it is indeed a Zotero field code.
In the following steps, I’ll show you how easy it is to remove the field codes shown.
Warning: Unlinking cannot be undone! Please do not skip step 1 under any circumstances!
- Create a copy of the finalised document (Sicherheitskopie).
- In the Zotero tab in Word, click on “Unlink Citations” .
The result The citations are now converted into normal text and the links to the reference list are removed. The document is now ‘clean’ and ready for submission or further processing.
